Mofirc

From MonkeyFilter Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

ricliletolis vizelalsitr #mofirc is an IRC channel associated with MonkeyFilter in a semi-official sense. It is open to all monkeys and has a steady bunch of about two dozen regulars. There are no set rules for conversations, though the free-for-all nature does come with a warning: the topics and content may not be suitable for small children. There are no operators in the channel, though some long time regulars, particularly Richer and Melinika, can invoke operator privileges if needed. (It's rarely needed.)

The culture of the IRC channel is somewhat different from MonkeyFilter itself: it tends to engender a closer feeling of community than can be found in the comparably more static main site. Despite this closeness, however, the community tries its best to remain open and welcoming to new members. There are few in-jokes and no secret handshakes. The lack of operators ensures that there is no established royalty, nor any abuse of power. The general consensus among established IRC veterans is that #mofirc is one of the friendliest channels around.

Software You'll Need

The following list is not comprehensive and placement on this page does not constitute an endorsement of said software. However, the members of #mofirc use this stuff in some form or fashion and seem to like it. Most of the software is free; shareware/commercial is noted. Most conversation is conducted in English, but occasionally non-English characters are used - the clients that can easily handle it are noted.

    • XChat (UTF-8 support may vary - check the project page)
    • MIrc MIrc for Windows ($hareware)
    • TinyIRC ($hareware/Freeware)(slightly sucky, but requires no installation and is very portable)
    • KVirc (Freeware)(Way over-designed interface, UTF-8 aware)
    • savIRC (Freeware) (clone of mIRC, UTF-8 aware)
  • Macintosh OS X
  • Linux, BSD, etc.
    • Xchat XChat for Linux, etc. (may require compilation)
    • irssi irssi client for POSIX-type os'es. (may require compilation)
  • Multi-Platform
    • Chatzilla Chatzilla client for Mozilla browsers

If there are other software clients out there, feel free to post them here.

Getting To #Mofirc

One of the following methods should work for you

Method 1:

  1. Open up chat software
  2. Select "Slashnet" from the dialogue box
  3. Once you connect, type "/join #mofirc" and hit Enter

Method 2:

  1. Open up chat software
  2. Type "/server irc.slashnet.org" and hit Enter
  3. Observe the wonderful message
  4. Continue observing the wonderful message
  5. Type "/join #mofirc" and hit Enter

OK, sorry if all that is a little vague, but most software packages will allow for some variant of Method 1. The key thing is that the server is irc.slashnet.org, which automagically connects you a server (it's a kind of meta-server load-distributor), and the channel in question is #mofirc.

The two key commands are

  • /server server url
  • /join #channelname

Pronunciation Guide

Rhyme "#mofirc" with Atatürk, but inflect it like the "go fuck" in Dick Cheney's famous "Go Fuck Yourself" comment (said to Senator Patrick Leahy on the floor of the U.S. Senate).

Yes, "#mofirc yourself" is an acceptable rebuke for someone who's being too chatty on MonkeyFilter proper.

Note, the Londoners and their Southern brethren can never quite agree with the nice honest people from Yorkshire or Liverpool about how much to clack the final consonant of "#mofirc". It comes down to your love for the Welsh, really; but whatever the case, do not say "#moifirc" like the loons in Lancashire. Good Lord, do you want to be taken for the Irish?!
