The Angle of Incidence Equals the Angle of Reflection

"A solitary bird sings a love song
To an unknown partner."

I think most birds sing to protect their turf.
They sing to enemies, not to lovers.
To attract lovers, they display and dance,
Fanning feathers, making rhythms with feet,
Fighting rivals, courting the desired mate.

But the bird is the master of his realm.
Yes, "his," though females sit by to judge the
Worthiness of competing partners and
Mostly don't do a lot of singing, but
Make a choice and live with it for a year.

Oh, I know, there are birds who mate for life,
And who pine and die when their mates are dead,
But, in courtship, she was the one who chose
To stay with her best beloved courter.
So is this love, as humans see it?

Don't know, but I don't think birds yearn as humans do.
I love yearning, it keeps me going forward.
I love lost loves because of the emotions
They let me feel. And, I've come to love me.
So, if no one comes to court me, I'll go
To the restaurant across the street
And have a chile relleno with rice and beans,
And go back to my room and sleep well.
