MySkin problems
The MySkin "skin" is not reading in the correct skin. This appears to be a problem with the Mediawiki software's default configuration. I am currently trying to figure out the problem, and will post a fix in a bit. — fuyugare 15:56, 4 May 2005 (EDT)
- The problem appears to be that
$wgAllowUserCssand$wgAllowUserJsare set tofalseby default in.../include/DefaultSettings.php. As these only enable client-side code, there is no security risk for the server to setting them totrue. All the Wikimedia sites and hrwiki.org have them enabled, for instance. Tracy, can I talk you into setting them totrue? — fuyugare 18:12, 12 May 2005 (EDT)
Editing Problems
When I click on the edit problem (Firefox 1.0.3) instead of going to the edit page, I'm asked where I want to save 'index.php'. I have to click on edit two or three times to actually get to the edit page. --Kimberly 15:51, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
- I've seen this too, but haven't looked into why. --tracicle 18:03, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
I have seen this too. I am thinking the http headers are corrupt to some extent. --Rolypolyman 18:58, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
- Okay, so we had a look at the caching last night (this applies to both the index.php file and the cache problems below) and what's been happening is that the wiki has inbuilt compression that decompresses the pages before delivering them. Mike reckons the compression/decompression process causes the http headers and content to get mixed up. We've turned off the compression and as people's caches of the wiki clear in the next few days you should see the problem disappear. --tracicle 16:41, 8 May 2005 (EDT)
Cache Problems
After I edit a page, the change is not reflected. When I hit cntrl+F5, I get a page full of gobbledy gook and have to hit refresh again before changes are reflected. This happens 99% of the time. (Firefox 1.0.3) --Kimberly 15:51, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
- It's apparently a config issue. I thought I'd fixed it but apparently not, and I'm certainly noticing it with the recent influx of wikiers. --tracicle 18:06, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
I have been noticing a cache problem on wiki.monkeyfilter.com with my Firefox V1.0.3, including my other computers. Basically a newly changed wiki.monkey page does not update unless I do a Shift+Reload. I have seen the gobbledegook (apparently http headers, etc) on rare occasion. I wonder if there is corruption in the http headers (maybe a corrupt filesize or something, among other things), and that's tied to the cache issue somehow. --Rolypolyman 18:57, 7 May 2005 (EDT)
About Special:Allpages
Is there any way we can clean up Special:Allpages so that each user's online CDX page doesn't display, only the index page? --Muffpub 2 21 11:53, 8 May 2005 (EDT)
- Muffpub - perhaps what would be best would to create a category for Online CDX - maybe a bunch of categories. I don't know a lot about wikiing, other than basic page edits, but it seems that a Special:All page would always have to show all pages, but there is a Special:Categories page, if I recall correctly. I had been thinking that if pages were organised by category, the wiki would be more user-friendly. - jb 23:57, 9 May 2005 (EDT)
- I've just started categorising each CDX page but that isn't going to do it, unfortunately. I'm thinking our best bet is to categorise every page on the wiki. Then the main page can contain a list of possible categories and serve as a starting point for browsing the wiki as a whole. We could hash out some broad categories on my talk page. --tracicle 03:44, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- This is completely pointless. One, the so-called category is in the name of the page already. How many times do you want "Online CDX" repeated on the page? Second, it ought to be a namespace, very much like the "MonkeyFilter Wiki" or the "User" namespaces, if anything. Thirdly, keeping the Special:Allpages page "clean" is a bizarre, unimplementable, and useless goal. Please consider unlinking Special:Allpages from the Main Page, and using some other categorising schema. Remember that these "Special" pages translate to assloadss of database queries. MediaWiki is not optimised to handle "Special" pages elegantly. — fuyugare 12:25, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- Note also that the category doesn't address the actual complaint, which is that Special:Allpages is being polluted. Making it a namespace will solve this problem. — fuyugare 12:51, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- The separate namespace might be a good idea, as the online exchanges are likely to breed many more pages with every exchange. But in general, I think MofiWiki will soon out grow the Special:All as a useful navigation tool. There are already enough pages there that I get a bit confused, and we've just begun. That's why I started categorising, so that the wiki would be navigable from the Special:Categories page (or the front page to list major categories). We could even categorize our categories (latent library training coming out, but I would happily turn it over to a professional), if we start getting too many.
- If we are going the categorising route, is there a place where we can discuss good categories? I created one (Fun & Games) to decribe some of the online fun here (the neverending story), but if that's not good, please change. I wasn't sure where to put something like Bob - Fun & Games or Esoteric Mysteries ? Or both? (This kind of quandries are why I left serious library work :) - jb 15:18, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- Fun & Games seems fine to me, jb. fuyu, I used the categories primarily because, like I've said many times, I'm still learning about the various processes in running a wiki and I didn't know there was any other option aside from categorising. And as I said above, the main page would become a portal to contain the categories as a startoff point so obviously the link to Special:Allpages will be gone. That link has served its purpose while the wiki is still small enough. You're repeating what I already said in my comment above also about the categorising not working. Thank you for suggesting the namespace and you're welcome to implement it if you haven't done so already. --tracicle 15:30, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- I can't create it. It requires modifying
LocalSettings.phpwhich only you or Mike have access to. Here's how to do it if you're curious. Now, I should note that if purifying Special:Allpages is not a goal, then I no longer recommend making a special namespace for it. I'm happy with the way things are now: the Online CDX page gets dynamically regenerated, and the Category:Online CDX bit can be added to Template:Cdx footer instead of adding it by hand to every page (like jb has already done for some pages). I still remain skeptical of the merit of Category:Online CDX, particularly why someone would want to see the whole bag of goods in a single page, but whatever. — fuyugare 18:14, 10 May 2005 (EDT)
- I can't create it. It requires modifying
Navel Gazing
We need to use what is this wiki for? to figure out what the purpose of the wiki is. Once we've figured that out we need to establish some rules to avoid all these "is this appropriate?" discussions. IMHO. --Muffpub 2 21 11:57, 8 May 2005 (EDT)
Inline HTML tags
The Mediawiki software seems to barf on <span> tags. This seems to be a problem with Wikipedia also. I hope it's not because my browser is auto-converting < to <, etc. Tensor2 17:07, 14 Jul 2005 (EDT)
